On the right of the Ortaköy seaside square, sits the pretty Neoclassical Ortaköy Mosque. Originally built in the 18th century, the current mosque was ordered by Sultan Abdülmecid I in the 19th century and designed by the father-and-son architects Karabet Amira Balyan and Nigoğos Balyan (who also designed the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace). Its front was renovated between 1854 and 1856. Inside, Abdülmecid, who was a master calligrapher, hung examples of his own work.
