Douglas Scott Brookes teaches courses in Ottoman language and culture at the University of California, Berkeley. His first book, The Ottoman Gentleman of the Sixteenth Century, translated the intricate portrait of Ottoman life penned in 1599 by famed historian Gelibolulu Mustafa Âli. He is currently translating Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil’s beautiful memoir of his years as Private Secretary to Sultan Mehmed V Reşad, from 1909 to 1912.
