Chamber Music Festival Opening Concert
The 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival opens with a concert entitled Yıldızlarla Açılış Konseri (‘Opening Concert with Stars’) at the Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy. On the programme are two piano quintets: César Franck’s 3-movement Piano Quintet in F minor, Opus 14, written in 1879 and regarded as one of the composer’s finest achievements, and Antonín Dvořák’s four-movement Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Opus 81, composed in 1887 and acknowledged to be one of the masterpieces of the string sextet genre. The performers are Fedor Rudin and Alexandra Soumm (violins), Máté Szűcs (viola), Lydia Shelley (cello) and Julien Libeer (piano).

Chamber music
The 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival continues with a concert subtitled Festival Buluşması (‘Festival Encounter’) that features a string quartet and a string sextet. On the programme are the String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Opus 35, by the Russian Romantic composer, pianist, conductor and music professor Anton Arensky (1861-1906), whose lyrical style is often compared to that of Tchaikovsky, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Sextet for Strings in D minor, Opus 70, subtitled Souvenir de Florence and composed during the summer of 1890 after a visit to Florence. The performers are Emmanuel Coppey and Katerina Chatzinikolau (violins), Razvan Popovici and Ali Başeğmezler (violas) and Marc Coppey and Nil Kocamangil (cellos).

Anatolian Clarinet Connection
The next event in the 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival is a concert by ‘Anatolian Clarinet Connection’, a quartet consisting of Yağızcan Keskin (clarinet), Çağdaş Engin (clarinet and basset horn), Fevzi Onur (clarinet and bass clarinet) and İlter Vurucu (piano). They perform arrangements – some of them created by themselves – of a selection of works from a variety of periods.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19
Chamber music for strings and piano
The next-to-last event in the 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival is by some young string players who attended the Festival’s master classes – Deniz Yakın (violin), Beliz Güney (cello) and Çağtay Yurt (double bass) – and Miguel Da Silva (viola), their teacher. Accompanying them all on the piano, meanwhile, is Caspar Frantz. On the programme are Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E flat major, Opus 47, and Schubert’s much-celebrated Piano Quintet in A major, D667 – the ‘Trout Quintet’. This concert is entitled Festivalin Genç Yıldızları ve Ustalar (‘The Young Stars of the Festival, and the Masters’).

Chamber Music Festival Closing Concert
The closing concert of the 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival features the ‘Alliage Quintett’ – Daniel Gauthier (soprano saxophone), Miguel Valles (alto saxophone), Jang Eun Bae (piano), Simon Hanrath (tenor saxophone) and Sebastian Pottmeier (baritone saxophone). They play pieces and arrangements of pieces by Bernstein (his Candide Overture and his West Side Story Suite), Shostakovich (his Five Pieces), Bizet (his Carmen Suite), Saint-Saëns (his Danse Bacchanale) and Khatchaturian (the Waltz from his Masquerade Suite).
