Directly opposite Üsküdar, Beşiktaş is where the Bosphorus begins, a solid working-class town which in a year or two’s time will be home to one of the best naval museums in the world. The great Ottoman admiral Barbarossa’s 16th-century mausoleum presides over the seaside square.
