Frescos from Karanlık Kilise (Dick Osseman)
Cappadocia’s largest monastic community hewed this extraordinary collection of painted cave churches just a mile from the centre of the modern town of Göreme. They date from the 10th to 12th centuries and include refectories with tables and benches cut from the stone and churches that may have served as cathedrals. The finest frescoes are in Karanlık Kilise, for which there is a small extra charge. Göreme was the second place in Turkey to be listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
