Bir Garip Şehir
Taking its title from the ‘garip’ poets of the 1950s, Timurtaş Onat, a veteran photographer and documentary maker, catches his hometown Istanbul’s infinite strangeness (gariplik) in beautifully crafted black and white images captured over the past 20 years. An essential addition to any library of Istanbul photography.
The book is dedicated to his mother and father, and begins with a charming of young Timurtaş seen together with them on board the Izmir ferryboat. The sculptor David Cregeen rightly praises the artist’s ‘restrained and brilliantly effective play of light and shade’ of the ‘images and existential moments of the city’.
‘This collection is not a focus on the familiar architectural treasures of Istanbul,’ writes the Edinburgh-based sculptor, ‘but Istanbul pulsing with life at times oddly and with such variety. It is an inspirational work of passion and as always in his work there is the loving appreciation of life, all life, human and other… This is the story of Istanbul today.’
