Kastamonu’s Uğurlu Mansions

Şeyh Şaban-ı Veli Cad 47-51, Hisarardı Mah., Kastamonu, Turkey

→ Book Now

About an hour’s drive from Safranbolu. Entering from the south you follow Cumhuriyet Caddesi north up the righthand side of the river. Take the first bridge on your left and keep straight on until you reach the foot of the castle. The Uğurlu is on the left looking up at the castle. If coming by bus, ask to be collected by the hotel.

Two of Kastamonu’s konaks have been converted into good boutique hotels under the same management. The Uğurlu – at the top of the town, below the Kafkaesque fortress behind the bazaars quarter – is the more recent and the smarter, with a garden in which to sip your ice-cold Efes (not a treat available in many places in Kastamonu).

The view of the castle is spectacular, the rooms spacious and it is a perfectly easy walk down into the town’s çarşı district.

Some might miss the fact that there is no sense of creaking floorboards. But for the travel-weary in need of creature comforts, this is the place to stay.
