Mabeynci Faik Bey Yalı

Beylerbeyi, Istanbul

This turreted confection of a house was built by Abdülhamid II’s chief of protocol in 1890 to replace an old harem next door to the Hasip Pasha Yalı. The Mabeynci Faik Bey Yalı was celebrated for its musical and literary salons – both his daughters, ‘Tanburi’ Faize Ergin and Fahire Fersan, became notable composers. In the 1960s the house featured in the heist movie Topkapi, starring Melina Mercouri and Peter Ustinov.
