This is a preliminary announcement about the TIOL3 SEMINAR Wednesday 9 – Saturday 12 April 2025 to be held in Istanbul. This Seminar is presented by Travellers in Ottoman Lands, in association with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Sabancı University, ASTENE, NIT (the Netherlands Institute in Turkey), and Cornucopia.
The speakers will explore many fascinating subjects relevant to travel in the region during the Ottoman period, including:
• Horticulture and botany
• Memorials, cemeteries, places of worship of various faiths
• Women travellers
• Cuisine
• Art and Culture
• Travel and exile
• Archaeology
• Explorers and photographers
• Modes of travel
• Famous travellers
• Architecture
The TIOL3 Seminar follows the successful Travellers in Ottoman Lands: The Botanical Legacy seminar (TIOL1) held in Edinburgh in 2017 and Travellers in Ottoman Lands: The Balkans, Anatolia and Beyond seminar (TIOL2) held in Sarajevo in 2022. Peer reviewed papers from TIOL1 have already been published and the papers from TIOL2 are currently in the process of publication.
Three days of presentation sessions in Istanbul in the historical neighbourhoods of Karaköy and Beyoğlu will be followed by one day of excursions.
Further details of the seminar and a formal Call for Papers will be available from early April 2024.
The final date for submission of proposals is 15 November 2024.
All proposals will be subject to peer review and their acceptance will be announced by mid-January 2025.
Registration will open on 31 January 2025 when the draft Programme will also be available.
