Yılanlı Yalı

Bebek, Istanbul

The only reminder of the yalıs that once stood on the seaside esplanade in Bebek is the late 18th-century Yılanlı Yalı (Yalı of the Serpents), located on the headland and rebuilt in 1989 (after it was damaged by fire in 1964) without its 60-room harem. Mahmud II backed out of buying it when a hostile neighbour told him the place was infested with snakes.
