Part of the Dolmabahçe Palace, in the former crown princes’ residences, this new museum opened in 2014 and displays around 200 paintings by both Turkish and international artists. The paintings are divided into several sections, including ‘Orientalist Painters’, ‘Istanbul Views’, ‘Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky’ (the 19th-century Russian artist who raised European maritime painting to a new level), ‘Westernisation in the Ottoman Empire’ and ‘Turkish Painters (1890–1930)’.
