British Seamen’s Hospital

Galata, Beyoğlu, Istanbul

Now home to the state-run St George Eye Hospital, this beautiful building was once the British Seamen’s Hospital. Designed by the British architect Charles Holden in 1903 (when he was in his 20s), it has a magnificent marble staircase, elegant balconies, a grand entrance and a tower from which the hospital staff observed incoming vessels. The iron gates still bear the initials BSH.
