Lâleli Çeşme (Tulip Fountain)

Laleli Çeşme Sokak, Karaköy, Istanbul

Built in 1905, probably by Raimondo D’Aronco, this is a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture. The nearby lighting shop bathes the fountain in different colours: a kaleidoscope of reds, purples and greens. The street sign is the only nuisance.

D’Aronco’s work in Istanbul is described in Paolo Girardelli’s article ‘D’Aronco: Architect to the New Society’, in Cornucopia 46.
