Originally built in 1885 in Gothic style, the current building dates back from 1931. The synagogue was founded by a group of Sephardi Jews of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese origins who, after long-standing disputes within the Jewish community, broke away from the main body of the Sephardi community of Istanbul in 1862. Saturday concerts of the Naflirim Choir were held in the synagogue until 1922.
There are two more synagogues nearby: the Neve Shalom and the Ashkenazi, built by the Austrian Jews in the 1900s.
