Peştemals, towels, robes, silk products and kese are all woven on old style looms and made from natural materials. All materials are grown in Turkey and woven in Turkey. Ph. Monica Fritz
Since its doors opened in 2009 Jennifer’s Hamam, in the Arasta Bazaar, has set about redefining the Turkish towel. The Canadian Jennifer Gaudet set out to revitalise family weaving, producing uniquely designed, traditionally woven towels from organically sourced cotton and linen. One of eight or nine families that work for the shop also weave in silk. One-of-a-kind towels, thinner peştamel hamam towels – easier to carry in the baggage, and doubling up as scarves or wraps – impossibly luxurious bathrobes. Prices may seem steep, but are understandably so, and have not changed in four years despite growing international demand. She has to change designs faster than others can copy, which means that if you hesitate you may well regret it.
