On 3 and 10 February, Istanbul Modern Cinema will be running a series of films by Iranian director Jafar Panahi. A leading member of the Iranian New Wave of filmmakers, Panahi's work is often described as neorealism with a politically engaged Iranian twist. His first film, The White Balloon, won the Camera d'Or at Cannes, and later works have received awards at the Venice and Locarno film festivals. Sadly, he was arrested in Tehran in March 2010, charged with “assembly and colluding with the intention to commit crimes against the country’s national security and propaganda against the Islamic Republic,” leading to a six-year jail sentence and a twenty-year ban on making films. To find out more about Panahi's situation and show solidarity with him, see the Cine Foundation International's White Meadows page. For times, dates, and other information, please click here.
