A new exhibition at the Ara Güler Museum follows him as he slips through the crowds at the Cannes Film Festival
At Cannes the Riviera glitters and cinema spills into the streets. Amid this spectacle, it is a surprise to find the late Ara Güler entirely at ease among the mob of celebrities. He first went in 1957 with the magazine Yeni İstanbul and was a regular until 1967. CANNES! at the Ara Güler Museum, in Bomonti, Istanbul (until October 11, 2026), presents previously unseen images from his archive evoking a golden era of cinema. Güler’s trusty Leica captures iconic faces of the era and moments just beyond the spotlight. The exhibition moves from beach to award ceremonies and late-night parties. But by then, Güler is already back in his hotel room, intent on developing precious negatives bound for Istanbul.
