Before marrying Ernestine Leibovici, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu first fell in love with her art. At an exhibition at André Lhote’s academic studio in Paris in 1932, the Turkish painter pointed out his three favourite pieces to the young Romanian woman who had greeted him at the door. “She turned red and started to smile, and he realised that this was her work. He described their first encounter as an electric jolt,” says the art historian Ömer Faruk Şerifoğlu, the curator of a new show about the two artists.
