Two of Kastamonu’s konaks have been converted into good boutique hotels under the same management. The Uğurlu – at the top of the town, below the Kafkaesque fortress behind the bazaars quarter – is the more recent and the smarter, with a garden in which to sip your ice-cold Efes (not a treat available in many places in Kastamonu).
The view of the castle is spectacular, the rooms spacious and it is a perfectly easy walk down into the town’s çarşı district.
Some might miss the fact that there is no sense of creaking floorboards. But for the travel-weary in need of creature comforts, this is the place to stay.
