Nimetiye Han

Arap Cami Mh., Yemeniciler Caddesi, Karaköy, Istanbul

This late-19th-century building (the foundations of which are medieval Genoese) is today home to workshops producing lathes. One of these is Bektaş Usta who has been working in the building for 40 years and makes copies of steel machine parts. The building was once also a tobacco factory and a hamam.

Owen Matthews’ article ‘Secrets of Beyoğlu’ in ‘The European City’ in Cornucopia 51 profiles the neighbourhood’s most colourful characters.
